Weed Control Tips That Actually Work in California

Pre-emergent timing
Apply pre-emergent right before the first fall rain — usually mid-October in Sonora. A second lighter application in late February bridges you into spring.
When to pull
Hand-pull annual weeds when soil is moist, before they seed. One hour in April saves ten hours in July.
Spot treatment
Fence lines, gravel driveways, and DG paths respond well to targeted spot treatment. Never blanket-spray a bed with edibles or pets nearby.

Star thistle needs a spring pull before it flowers. Once it seeds, you're committed to at least two more seasons of control. Mowing after seed set does not stop it.
