Weed Control Tips That Actually Work in California
Foothill-tested weed strategies for Sonora and Tuolumne County — from star thistle to bindweed to gravel driveways.
Weed control in the foothills is a calendar problem. Miss the pre-emergent window and you're pulling by hand all summer. Nail the timing and you barely see weeds at all.
Pre-emergent timing
Apply pre-emergent right before the first fall rain — usually mid-October in Sonora. A second lighter application in late February bridges you into spring.
When to pull
Hand-pull annual weeds when soil is moist, before they seed. One hour in April saves ten hours in July.
Spot treatment
Fence lines, gravel driveways, and DG paths respond well to targeted spot treatment. Never blanket-spray a bed with edibles or pets nearby.
Star thistle specifically
Star thistle needs a spring pull before it flowers. Once it seeds, you're committed to at least two more seasons of control. Mowing after seed set does not stop it.

Frequently asked
What's the best pre-emergent?
Prodiamine and pendimethalin are standard for California lawns and beds. Timing matters more than product choice.
Is Roundup safe?
Glyphosate is legal for licensed and homeowner use, but we default to spot-only application away from edibles and pets. Alternatives exist.
