Summer Lawn Care Tips for California Heat

Keep a Sonora lawn green through July and August with the right mow height, water schedule, and stress management.

July and August are hard on cool-season lawns in the foothills. The playbook shifts from growth to survival — keep the lawn alive, dense, and ready to bounce back in September.

Raise the deck

Bump mow height to 3.75 or even 4 inches through peak heat. Longer blades shade the crown, reduce evaporation, and protect roots.

Water for depth

Two to three deep cycles per week beats daily shallow watering. Roots follow water — shallow watering builds shallow roots that fry in July.

Read the stress signals

Gray-blue color, footprints that don't spring back, and blade rolling all mean the lawn needs water. Wilting is the last warning.

Recover in fall

Skip mid-summer fertilizer. Overseed thin areas in September and apply the second fertilizer of the year. Most lawns fully recover in 4 to 6 weeks.

Frequently asked

Should I water every day in summer?

No. Deep and infrequent (2 to 3 times per week) is almost always better than daily shallow watering.

Why is my lawn brown in patches?

Usually a combination of dry spots, sprinkler coverage gaps, and heat stress. A quick irrigation audit finds the issue.
