When to trim
Late winter heavy trim, mid-summer light shape is the standard cycle for most Sonora hedges. Never trim during peak heat or during a hard freeze.
How to shape
Slight taper: the top narrower than the bottom, so light reaches the base. String a line for formal hedges. Sharp blades only, never a dull chomping cut.
By species
- Privet: fast, 2 to 3 trims per year
- Laurel: fast, 2 to 3 trims
- Boxwood: slow, once per year
- Photinia: fast, watch for leaf spot
- Juniper: slow, minimal shaping — avoid near structures
